Rosie’s: Helping NY Step Up its Mexican Game

Have you noticed that Mexican food is #trending in NYC? Tex-Mex joints, tequila bars, and Mexican fusion places have been popping up everywhere, and guess who’s not complaining? These guacamole-loving gals.

New York, formerly stuck on the JV bench when it came to Mexican grub, seems to be gearing up for the big leagues. From high-end Cosme to cult-fave Mission Cantina, from Javelina to Tijuana Picnic, to tiny taco-slinging Los Tacos #1, New York is not messing around when it comes to upping its Mexican game.

Next in this lineup is Rosie’s – the open-aired East Village joint from the team behind Cookshop, Vic’s, and Hundred Acres. And executive chef Marc Meyer is not taking his foray into Mexican lightly; he’s been studying for more than 25 years and is committed to traditional preparation methods and ingredients that are fresh, fresh, fresh. The menu will please any fan of Mexican food: serving up the standard tostadas, enchiladas, and tacos, and elaborating with antojitos (hand-rolled masa munchies), pork al pastor, and mariscos al chilpachole (a summertime fish stew). We’re planning on going back for the Baja Fish Tacos (Take that, Los Angeles!).

We liked that Rosie’s was casual, not corny with fiesta décor, but earthy and calming, with a central bar where you can watch those masa munchies being made. Rosie’s is perfectly unfussy, and will provide us a lil’ getaway when we can’t make it to the Riviera Maya.
