That Back To School Feeling: Fall Classes in NYC
We’ve put away the pool toys, unpacked our sweaters (which was a bad idea… #heatwave), and pondered whether we’ll be partaking in the pumpkin spice tradition this Fall. But something’s missing. We feel… incomplete. What is it?
A backpack, maybe? And not just because they’re so-in-right-now.
This time of year always feels to us like we should be headed back to school. This might simply be because we refuse to acknowledge our age (Will we ever feel like grownups?), but each year we think this feeling might go away, and then the next year comes around, and there we are: itching to restock on notebooks and glitter pens, stickers and planners.
But we realized this: Rather than a whiny refutation of our iffy maturity, this feeling is a positive, productive one. This September-association of our youth makes our minds feel spongy and ready to acquire knowledge. And this year, we’re going to capitalize on that.
While it may seem like here at #FAT, we’re all about serving platters and stuffing our faces, there’s a little bit more to the picture. We love mastering (or attempting) new skills, finding new inspiration to imitate and emulate, because we feel that the more we know, the more rich and lively experiences we can create around a table. So, in the spirit of knowledge-acquisition (and fun!), here are some great classes to take this Fall. [Insert class bell sound here].
The Posy Academy: We can’t think of a nicer way to spend a Sunday afternoon than learning tips for shopping the flower district and creating simple, European tied bouquets. These are elegant but actually simple enough to recreate. We envision these as housewarming gifts, “I’m thinking of yous” and ways to impress our mothers-in-law.
Preserves Less Traveled: Learn everything you need to know to master the art of pickling and preservation from the team at The Pixie and The Scout, the Brooklyn based, locally sourced, organically minded catering company, culinary workshop, and supper club.
Bake with Momofuko Milk Bar: You can make crack pie. We repeat: You can make crack pie. Learn this essential skill as well as the secrets to sprinkle cakes and more from the innovative & rebellious NYC bakery, headed by one of our foodie lady crushes Christina Tosi.
How to Make Roberta’s Pizza, Gourmet Doughnuts, or Legit Dumplings: The Brooklyn Kitchen teams up with some of New York City’s favorite restaurants, chefs, and foodies to help you master the dishes you crave. Classes are always changing and the place is as cool as any hipster Brooklyn hideaway.
Putnam & Putnam Floral Design Course: You’ve seen their work in everything from Vogue editorials to their own floral dress collaboration with Adam Lippes. They’re one of our go-to places for experiencing floral envy. Their classes, while a bit pricey, are worth the dough for that die hard flower child.
