DISHING with Timo Weiland

It’s not uncommon that people with great style are the same people who throw great shindigs. But fashion designers who are also DJs? Well, they might just take the cake in the “knowing how to party” category. We caught up with one such person — Timo Weiland — to ask about how he’s partying these days, now that he’s just moved to Brooklyn.

You love to host parties. How would you describe your entertaining style?

Elegance at ease. Handsome homestead. Modern nautical.

What’s your favorite cocktail to serve or be served at a party?

A Moscow Mule or a Manhattan.

Any favorite apps to serve?

Since my boyfriend Jeff is a vegetarian, we tend to keep it meat-free, like tomato with mozzarella balls on a toothpick, or crispy vegetable spring rolls.

What are three things that are always in your fridge?

Chilled Sauvignon Blanc, brie, and leftover Indian food!

What’s a food you can’t stand?

Bony fish. I always end up lacerating myself.

A food you think is totally overrated?

Quinoa.

Since you’ve recently become a Brooklynite, have you found any new great places to eat and drink?

Tons! Saint Mazie, Marlow & Sons, and Baby’s All Right is just downstairs from our loft. Also: East River Bar, Loosie Rouge, Donna. To eat, Moto, Maison Premiere, Aurora, and ISA.

If you’re not hosting at home, where’s a great place to throw a get-together?

I really love Brooklyn Bowl, the Wythe Hotel, and Viper Room at Output.

Any favorite home stores?

Haus Interiors, ASH New York, Mantiques.

Can you share some favorite florists?

Putnam & Putnam, TTH Blooms, Fox Fodder Farms.

What are some places in BK that you like to buy gifts?

Commune on Roebling, Concrete + Water

What’s the first thing you notice when you walk into someone else’s party?

I notice if people are having fun and comfortable in the setting. Top-dollar can be spent on the event, but it’s money wasted if the guests aren’t at ease.

What’s your definition of a perfect NYC night?

Sunset bottle of wine followed by several stops for light sips & bites with strolls in between. I am very ADD so I like progressive dinner parties and date nights. Nitehawk [Cinema] is the perfect final stop for dinner/dessert + a movie.

You’re an amazing DJ. What kind of music do you like to play when you entertain? Any songs you can share?

Upbeat and dancy. [Click here to link to my playlist]

If you could party with one person – living or dead – who would it be?

Keith Richards or Mick Jagger circa Exile on Main Street. Richard Branson would be cool, too.
