Restaurant Rolodex: Unexpected Bakeries for Passover Sweets

You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy a some chocolate covered matzo. And you don’t have to be a Jewish bakery to whip up a rich, flourless chocolate cake or toasty macaroon. Here are some of our favorite bakeries you may not know or think about for picking up Passover sweets.

Empire Cake
112 8th Ave.
NY, NY 10011

Known for their decadent cakes and homemade retro desserts, like a gourmet twinky and their fluffy black and white cookies, Empire Cake is one of our favorite excuses to eat cake. This Passover, they have a special menu with a flourless chocolate soufflé cake and tons of cookies, which we will be stuffing in our faces by the dozen. Whoops, we mean, which we’re excited to enjoy in moderation.

Erin McKenna’s Bakery
248 Broome St
NY, NY 10002

You know she is one of our favorite female chefs and pioneer in the GF and Vegan baking world. Her baked goods are also perfect for Passover, ‘cuz they ALL be Kosher and wheat free.

Sadelle’s
463 West Broadway
NY, NY 10012

OK so this is technically a Jewish style restaurant and bakery. But this is Major Food Group’s (Carbone and Dirty French) modern, ultra cool downtown take on traditional Jewish fare with flare. Like their bagels and whitefish salad, their passover desserts will not disappoint.

Laduree Soho
398 West Broadway
NY, NY 10012

There aren’t many hostess gifts as pretty as the little pastel boxes full of macaroons from Laduree. Bring a box full of their famous confections to your Passover seder for a fancy, flourless thank you.

Breads Bakery
18 East 16th St.
NY, NY 10011

This Union Square, no frills bakery is known for their chocolate babka and, of course, their seriously delicious bread. We never leave without one of their pastries, so when we learned they were going flourless for Passover, we were psyched. Order ahead from their completely flourless menu, with classics like almond crunch and orange marzipan and new Passover pleasers like their coconut chocolate chip cake or fruit tart.
