Feed Your Friends: The Return of the Ice Cream Sandwich

There’s a reason that Chipwiches were a huge part of our awkwardly plump early teen years… they were the bomb. And we wouldn’t take back any of our thirteen-year-old back fat to have eaten fewer.

So you can imagine how excited we were when we realized that ice cream sandwiches are making a major comeback along with Juicy tracksuits (we know, we mention these a lot, but now it’s topical), platform sneakers, and large be-cased cell phones. The old classic is being re-interpreted, multiplied, and upgraded at bakeries, restaurants, food carts, and food halls. Some flavors are downright fancy, others totally kooky, like the OddPockets from Odd Fellows (ice cream sandwiches mushed between warmed Brioche buns) or Melt Bakery’s Elvis Sandwich, packed with peanut butter and banana goodness. We’re taste testing across the city (and doubling up gym time) and creating one or two easy to make gourmet versions for our own dinner parties.

So sandwich on with our DIY ice cream sandwiches for your next dinner party or with our list of must-eat fancy sandwiches around the city.

Melt Bakery
132 Orchard Street NY, NY 10002

The Melt Bakery guys have been around for the last couple of years, and started whipping up their signature Elvis (peanut butter cookie with banana ice cream) back in 2012, way before it was a real trend. And, we must say, they’ve perfected the creative, perfectly baked take on the ice cream/cookie combo.
